Two leaves open toward the house, the layout the code allows for a gate that doesn't roll, with or without a motor. Each leaf needs clear room on the house side at least as wide as the leaf, and a drive that doesn't climb steeply behind the gate, or the bottom rail drags.
Big lots: set the gate back 20 ft
On residential lots of 20,000 sq ft or more, Palmdale lets you run a 6 ft open view fence inside the front setback. The trade off is where the vehicle gate goes. The code puts it at least 20 ft back from the property line, so a car can pull fully off the street and park while the gate is closed. On a long rural drive that's easy. On a short drive it can push the gate close to the house, so measure first. Smaller lots don't get the 6 ft front fence: theirs stays at 5 ft open view, or 3 ft solid.
Steel or wrought iron
Palmdale lists wrought iron as an allowed material and bans solid metal fencing, so a steel driveway gate has to be one you can see through. Room to roll, room to swing
Walk the drive with a tape measure first. A rolling gate needs a clear run beside the opening at least as long as the gate, free of trees, meters and steps. An inward swing needs each leaf's width clear on the house side, on fairly level ground. If neither fits, try two shorter slide gates meeting in the middle. Long drives, fire maps and fire engines
Parts of Palmdale, mostly the foothills on the south and west, are mapped Very High fire hazard on the state's 2025 map, which the city adopted in August 2025. Where a gate crosses a road that LA County Fire counts as a fire apparatus access road, its fire code asks for three things: approval of the gate by the fire code official, an approved way for crews to open it in an emergency, and a width of at least 20 ft for a single gate unless a narrower road was approved.
