Palmdale gate and fence rules, as the code reads now
Palmdale rewrote its fence and wall rules in 2023, in section 17.86.040 of the zoning code. The changes reach gates directly: how a driveway gate opens, where it sits on a big lot, what it's made of. Yet a city FAQ page still shows the old limits. This guide follows the code.

The driveway gate rule
If fencing is located across a driveway, the code says it "shall operate using an automated rolling gate, or open inward, away from the public right-of-way." It adds: "Any main gate shall open away from the public right-of-way."
In practice that leaves two choices. A rolling gate, which the wording expects to be automated, or a swing gate whose leaves open toward the house. A gate that swings out over the sidewalk or street is not allowed, whatever the lot size.

Height limits by yard
Heights are measured under PMC 17.17.030(E). For residential and mixed use zones:

One entry gateway or arch up to 10 ft high or wide is also allowed in the front setback.

Materials Palmdale bans
Wrought iron, masonry, durable vinyl and engineered wood are allowed. The banned list matters more for gates: natural wood, plywood, solid metal, tires, garage doors and other salvage. Chain link is prohibited in residential and mixed use zones unless it's temporary construction fencing. Barbed and razor wire are banned too, with narrow exceptions. For a steel gate, "solid metal" is the line to watch. Open view bars pass; a solid sheet panel does not.
Big lots and the 20 ft setback
On residential lots of 20,000 sq ft or more, a 6 ft open view fence may stand inside the required front setback. The same line of code sets a condition: "Any gates for vehicles must be set back a minimum of 20 feet from the property line to allow for vehicle parking when the gate is closed." The fence can come forward; the vehicle gate stays back.
Permits and Planning
Section 17.86.040 requires a building permit for new fences, walls and screening over 6 ft. The city's Building and Safety FAQ adds that "all fences and walls of any height do require approval from Planning."
Gate openers are less clear: no city page we found names them. New wiring for an opener may need an electrical permit, so check with Palmdale Building and Safety at 661-267-5353.
What the old city FAQ gets wrong
A Planning FAQ on the city's website, still live in September 2026, predates the 2023 code and often shows up first in search. Where the two disagree, the code governs.

Are there new California fence rules in 2026?
We haven't found a primary source for a new statewide fence rule in 2026, so we won't claim one. For a home in Palmdale, the rules that decide height, materials and gate direction are the city's own zoning code, section 17.86.040, rewritten in 2023.
What is the maximum fence height in LA County?
Palmdale is an incorporated city, so its own zoning code applies, not the county's. Here the residential limit is 6 ft in side and rear yards, 7 ft if the top foot is open view, and lower in the front setback: 3 ft solid or 5 ft open view.
Do I need a permit for a fence or gate in Palmdale?
Planning approval, yes, at any height, according to the city's Building and Safety FAQ. A building permit is needed once a fence or wall goes over 6 ft. For an automatic gate, ask Building and Safety whether the opener wiring needs an electrical permit, since no city page answers that directly.
Can I build an 8 ft fence in Palmdale?
Not on a normal residential lot. The code stops at 6 ft in side and rear yards, or 7 ft with an open view top foot. Industrial zones allow 8 ft, or 12 ft with a minor site plan review. A homeowner who needs more can ask about a variance or minor exception under PMC Chapter 17.23.
